Nain Canada

Since the provincial relocation program in the 1950’s, Nain, Labrador has been a troubled community. National media have reported on the substance abuse, suicide and desperation of this remote Canadian village.

Our mandate as a ministry is taken from Psalms 72:8, “He shall have dominion from sea to sea and from the river to the ends of the earth.”  As this mandate so accurately describes Canada, we knew we must do something for Nain. Nain needs Jesus.

Our ministry to Nain began in response to this burning desire to bring a hope and help. In December, 2001, BPEA had the privilege of providing Christmas for Nain, Labrador. The entire village of 1500 received groceries for a complete Christmas dinner, including a 10-lb turkey. In addition, we packed each family box with staple food products and toiletries, toys for the children, gifts for each adult, diapers and baby supplies, a Bible and Gospel videos and literature.

The way of salvation was explained in a Christmas letter, and each box was sent on its way with the love and prayers of the entire ministry and dozens of volunteers who lovingly packed each box. Despite gale-force winds and shipping complications, all the boxes arrived by Christmas Eve! Grateful local volunteers cheerfully delivered each box door-to-door by snowmobile, to the delight of each family. It was a tangible way to say, "We love you and Jesus loves you!"

Several expressed their overwhelming surprise and gratitude, and many have come to Christ as a direct result!

We have since established an Outreach Centre where hurting Inuit can go to find help and acceptance in the face of the harsh realities of life in Nain. Many families have experienced the anguish of alcoholism, abuse and suicide. The Outreach Centre is now a place of refuge, where they can find loving counsel, prayer and practical help with food and clothing. It has also provided accommodation for visiting mission teams.

Ray and Juanita Whalen have since relocated permanently to Nain to oversee the Outreach Centre and the ongoing ministry there.

Please pray about your part. Help us save lives and touch hearts at "the ends of the earth."
